Description
Pittsburgh is a bustling city that owes much of its success to the resilient African American community that calls it home. Throughout history, Pittsburgh has played a vital role as a stop on the Underground Railroad, offering hope and freedom to enslaved individuals seeking a better life up North. Many of these brave individuals chose to settle in Pittsburgh, contributing to the city’s vibrant culture.
In the early 20th century, Pittsburgh once again became a sought-after destination for African Americans during the Great Migration. As the rural South faced challenges, approximately 95% of these men found employment as steelworkers in Pittsburgh, further enriching the city’s diverse workforce.
Although there was no specific neighborhood where the majority of the Black population lived, Pittsburgh was not exempt from Jim Crow discrimination. Despite the hardships, the city’s residents persevered and found joy in their families and community. The renowned photographer Charles Teenie Harris brilliantly captured the candid moments of Pittsburgh’s African American residents, showcasing their triumphs, celebrations, and resilience in the face of adversity.
