Shared reading experiences offer a fun way to build early reading skills as well as encourage reading enjoyment and success! Here’s a simple gingerbread themed holiday reading activity that uses predictable sentences for easy reading – helping students build vocabulary, recognize common sight words, and build color word recognition skills.

We suggest using a pocket chart with simple sentence strips for the text and gingerbread shapes printed onto colored construction paper. [NOTE: Here’s a cute gingerbread man from MyCuteGraphics!] Students can read along as you point to each word and, later, can use pointers to read on their own!
